"Ramsey Lewis explores his musical roots here. The veteran pianist was deeply influenced not only by jazz, but also by classical and gospel music, and on "Time Flies" he takes a fresh look at the divergent styles that shaped him. Lewis opens the album with "Poco Allegretto" from Brahms' 3rd Symphony, and after stating the main theme, Lewis and his trio transform it into a swinging jazz workout. Lewis approaches Bach's "Air" in similar fashion, and his classically influenced composition "Second Thoughts" features cello accompaniment by trio member Larry Gray. Lewis gives his classic "The In Crowd" a snappy, contemporary groove, and he and his trio engage in wonderful ensemble work on the originals "Hide & Seek" and "Last Dance." Lewis' fleet-fingered piano accompanies a gospel choir on singer Yolanda Adams' "Open My Heart," and on gospel artist Kirk Franklin's "Hosanna," the choir and Lewis' spirited playing-including a big, dramatic finish-close this outstanding album on an inspirational note." Live-plaat uit 1965 van souljazzpianist, volgens de allmusic-redactie z'n beste. "Ramsey Lewis staked his claim to fame with "The In Crowd", the instrumental version of Dobie Gray's Top 40 hit. He also was one of the first soul-jazz icons of the mid-'60s. This is the moment where Lewis shined the brightest, the "in crowd" at the club was verbally into it, and the time for this music was right. What is not readily acknowledged over the years is that bassist Eldee Young is really the star of the show. He's the one who gets the crowd revved up with his vocalizing in tandem with the notes he is playing. It is on his "I Got a Woman" Ray Charles-like take on "Tennessee Waltz" and a similar treatment of Gale Garnett's minor pop hit "You Been Talkin' 'Bout Me Baby" that gets the patrons off. Of course the quintessential hip shakin' introductory title track gets the groove in motion, but it's Young that lights the fuse. His stellar work with drummer Redd Holt bolsters the style of Lewis."
Album uit 1999 met Lewis (p), Larry Gray (b) en Ernie Adams (d). Naast enkele eigen stukken vnl. klassieke melodieen (vooral uit opera's). Soms heel licht, soms zeer romantisch, maar ook behoorlijk spannend met fraai akkoordenwerk.
