"Bahia is widely (and rightly) regarded as a focal point for Brazilian music, spawning much of the Tropicalia movement, MPB, and the Afro-Brazilian traditions, as well as much of modern samba. Here, the old and new are both represented, as they are on much of the Rough Guide line. Old members of the Tropicalia movement are present in Tom Zé and Gilberto Gil. Mid-generation performers such as Carlinhos Brown and Ze Paulo bridge the gaps between old and new. Even the ancient Riachão, the great sambista, is around for a song. Perhaps more interestingly, some of the newer trends are present, largely in the form of bands that stem in one form or another from the singular greats and their interactions with the blocos Afros. Elements of reggae, Yoruba, and Dahomey traditions, along with various Caribbean sounds, can be heard along the way. A single album is arguably too little to capture the sounds. Capoeira Angola is een Afro-Braziliaanse mix van vechtsport en dans, in de begeleidende percussieve muziek speelt de eensnarige berimbau (een soort boog) een grote rol. Dit zijn authentieke opnamen door het Smithsonian Folkways-label.
Legendarische compilatie uit 1989, samengesteld door producer Ze da Flauta. Forro(bodo) is een straatfeest met dans en muziek. In deze muziek worden opwindende sambaritmes en vingervlug aan cajun en zydeco refererende accordeonspel gemengd.
Veldopnames van de uitvoering van spirituele rituelen van de Candoblé. "Candomblé is een religieuze beweging in Zuid-Amerika, met name in Brazilië, ontstaan in de tijd van de slavernij. Het heeft elementen van de katholieke eredienst en als basis de traditionele Afrikaanse religie van onder andere voorouderverering. Het voornaamste kenmerk is het geloof in een andere, parallelle wereld van geesten (spiritisme) en het maken van contact daarmee door zang, dans, muziek en offerandes. Het contact vindt plaats doordat een geest bezit neemt van een van de aanwezigen bij de ceremonie. Het lichaam van de mens wordt binnen de Candomblé gezien als een voertuig voor geesten. Elk levend lichaam heeft al een geest als eigenaar, maar het is voor sommige deelnemers aan de Candomblé mogelijk om tijdens de Candomblé ook als gastheer op te treden voor een andere geest."
