Not Available (1978)

"This is one of the strangest and most interesting recordings in rock history, which speaks volumes coming from one of the strangest and more interesting bands in rock history. Not Available used what was referred to as "the theory of obscurity" (which called for the album to not be released until its makers literally forgot about its existence). It is said to be, questionably, the Residents' second recorded album (in 1974, only to be released in 1978 after utilizing "the theory of obscurity"). A highly underrated and forgotten achievement in the Residents' body of work, Not Available is such an incredible recording to experience that it simply and truly cannot be classified as being like another. A surreal rock opera resulting in an incredibly weird circus of sound, it is one that simply must be heard to be believed." (Michael G. Breece, Allmusic)

Meet The Residents: The First Album by North Louisiana's Phenomenal Pop Combo (1974)

"The Residents are true avant-garde crazies. Their earliest albums (of which this is the first) have precedents in Captain Beefheart's experimental albums, Frank Zappa's conceptual numbers from "Freak Out!", and the compositions of chance music tonemeister John Cage -- yet the Residents' work of this time really sounds like nothing else that exists. All of the music on this release consists of deconstructions of countless rock and non-rock styles, which are then grafted together to create chaotic, formless, seemingly haphazard numbers; the first six "songs" (including a fragment from the Nancy Sinatra hit "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'") are strung together to form a larger entity similar in concept to the following lengthier selections. The album cover is a fierce burlesque of the Beatles' first U.S. Capitol label release, sporting puerilely doctored photographs of the Fab Four on the front and pictures of collarless-suited sea denizens on the back. An utterly bizarre platter." (David Cleary, Allmusic)

Coochie Brake - The Residents Present Sonidos De La Noche (2012)

"Coochie Brake is a big swamp in Louisiana and apparently the teenaged pre-Residents spent a fair amount of time there. There are rumors of Spanish gold and tales of murder that are also part of the swamp's lore. All of this must have played in the minds of those teenagers. This album plays like the soundtrack to creepy, imagination-filled nights. The sounds of the swamp are there: birds, insects... Some of these elements are integrated in the music, not merely a background. The ghosts of Spanish outlaws are there, too. The sound is dark and wet. It's a whole world unto itself, punctuated at times by Bob's screaming guitar. Carlos' performance is very low key so the effect is that of being in the swamp as faint apparitions come and go. There are a few driving numbers but it's mostly an uneasy calm. It's amazing that headed into their 40th anniversary (2012), the Residents continue to reinvent themselves and challenge listeners in ways that few bands would dare." Theory Of Obscurity (2016)

The first official documentary sanctioned by The Residents tells the story of the iconic renegade cult band. From the group's formation in Shreveport to their success in the burgeoning San Francisco avant-garde music scene of the 60s and 70s, The Residents redefined what a rock band could be. With the advent of music videos in the 1980s, these masked musicians gained global fame as MTV darlings and serious art world figures. The film was a critically acclaimed festival favorite that premiered at 2015 SXSW and has been invited to prestigious other festivals. It features interviews with many famous musicians, actors, and filmmakers who were inspired by The Residents, including: Jerry Harrison (The Talking Heads), Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons), Gerald Casale (Devo), Josh Freese (Guns N' Roses, Weezer) and others. Bonus features: Footage of The Residents first EVER performance at The Boarding House in San Francisco; footage and outtakes from their uncompleted film Vileness Fat; lots more. (bron: RSK)

Third Reich 'N Roll
CD

Third Reich 'N Roll

"The Residents were founded in the late sixties in the Bay Area, widely heralded for their ability to turn heads by staying out of musical confinements and shocking, out-of-this-world concepts. Each and every record in their legacy (which add up to more than 60 albums), is a groundbreaking exercise. The "Third Reich n Roll" is (aptly named) their third album. It revolves around the concept of pop music being fascist by selling fake rebellion to teens, keeping them docile and controllable. Maybe thats why American Bandstand host Dick Clark is pictured on the cover in a Nazi costume holding a carrot. The album dissects and ridicules famous pop songs (among which James Browns Papas Got A Brand New Bag) on both of its sidelong medleys. In all, it is said that no less than 29 pop songs are maimed and mangled into a mind shifting sonical experience that invites the listener to detect every pop culture reference thats in it." Eskimo (Incl. The Repacement) (1979)

Niemand weet wie The Residents eigenlijk zijn. (Bertus / MOV)
