Another Time The Hilversum Concert (2017)

"Het album "Bill Evans: At The Montreux Jazz Festival", vastgelegd op 15 juni 1968 en in 1997 was tot vorig jaar het enige audiodocument van het sensationele monsterverbond van pianist Bill Evans met bassist Eddie Gomez en drummer Jack DeJohnette, totdat Resonance Records ons in 2016 op het, zo bleek later, zeer terecht prijswinnende "Some Other Time: The Lost Sessions From The Black Forrest" trakteerde, slechts vijf dagen later vastgelegd in de beroemde MPS Studios in Villingen, Duitsland. Dit welhaast perfecte kwaliteitsproduct wordt heden echter nog overtroffen met "The Hilversum Concert", wéér twee dagen later opgenomen (22 juni 1968) in VARA Studio 8 voor het radioprogramma Jazz In Actie. Het is vastgelegd met apparatuur van op dat moment het hoogst mogelijke niveau en dit is daardoor waarschijnlijk audiofielen opgelet! mogelijk de best klinkende live-opname van Bill Evans. "Tony Scott led several small groups of various sizes during the month of November 1957, resulting in three separate LPs without duplicating any of the 24 tracks. This two-CD set collects everything recorded during these sessions. Scott's core group features pianist Bill Evans, either Milt Hinton or Henry Grimes on bass, and drummer Paul Motian. In addition to his powerful clarinet, Scott plays a potent baritone sax on six selections. The music includes a few standards, a handful of originals by Scott, and some obscure compositions. Trombonist Jimmy Knepper is a guest on several songs. As are Sahib Shihab and Clark Terry. Even though Evans was yet to make his mark as a leader or composer, his "Five" is heard in extended form rather than as a brief sign off as he played on early recording dates. He also solos brilliantly in "There Will Never Be Another You." The title to this collection is a bit misleading, as trustworthy discographies list these sessions as being recorded over several days." (Allmusic).

Bill Evans & Monica Zetterlund (1991)

"Bill Evans' career in live settings is well documented. This 1975 set in Sweden is unique as it is one of his rare outings accompanying a vocalist in concert, Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund, who sits in with him for the latter half of this show. The first half features four numbers by his trio with bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Eliot Zigmund, kicking off with a tantalizing version of "Sugar Plum". Evans had accompanied Zetterlund on one of her early recordings, but it is surprising to hear their reunion on a club date, since he rarely played with a vocalist in front of an audience. The Swedish vocalist has long been underrated, in spite of her impressive recordings. She is an understated singer, yet true to each song, beginning with an intimate "Come Rain or Come Shine." Evans' inventive backing for her in "What's New" is a highlight. Zetterlund reaches her emotional peak with her striking take of Michel Legrand's "Once Upon a Summertime."" (Allmusic)
