Highlights include "Carolina Rua" with Imelda May (followed by the Chieftains jamming on a reel), "Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies" by the Pistol Annies, who wed their unique roots music to the Celtic tradition seamlessly, the stunning, "My Lagan Love" with Lisa Hannigan's otherworldly voice, and the Civil Wars' reverent yet joyful reading of "My Lily Love." On these cuts, one can hear the Chieftains really creating with their intuitive magic; extending the scope of Irish music into the world of popular music, with vocalists who understand -- at root level -- what they're all about. Another winner is Bob Dylan's "When the Ship Comes In" with the Decemberists. Concertregistratie van The Chieftains en gastmusici, opgenomen in de Ryman Auditorium te Nashville. Die gastmusici zijn afkomstig uit de country- en bluegrasswereld: Emmylou Harris, Jerry Douglas, Earl Scruggs, Alison Krauss.... Is er een connectie tussen Keltische muziek en country? Zeker, vooral tussen bluegrass en Keltische muziek. Een Ierse fiddler zal vele zogenaamd traditioneel-Amerikaanse bluegrass-melodieën onmiddellijk herkennen als afkomstig uit de Keltische traditie. Ofwel: die zijn door (vooral) Ierse immigranten in Amerika geïntroduceerd en geëvolueerd. Dit project probeert die connectie bloot te leggen, waarbij de fiddle en de banjo natuurlijk regelmatig in het middelpunt staan.

"The Chieftains' second album for Columbia Records was a distinct departure from the pattern of their previous releases in its structure. The opening number, "The Session," is exuberant enough, but for a change the percussion section is relatively restrained throughout, and it's the whistles, pipes and fiddle that drive the piece, for a Bolero-like opening that builds across more than 4 minutes. And then it's off to the gentle, lyrical "Doctor John Hart," featuring harpist Derek Bell, before the group jumps into the boisterous "Seán Sa Cheo." And so it goes, through the rollicking "If I Had Maggie in the Wood," the lush fiddle showcase "The Dogs Among the Bushes," and the gently sentimental "Miss Hamilton," where plucked stringed instruments of all sorts get to generate their prettiest sounds. The mix of tempos, moods, and timbres alternate markedly throughout this, one of the group's more rich and diversely textured albums. There's hardly a moment that's not profoundly beautiful." Plaat waarop deze Ieren samenspelen met (Keltisch-)Canadese folk-bands voor een 'Kitchen Party', verwant aan de Ierse 'Hooley'. Dat levert vooral veel feestelijke 'jigs' op, hoewel al die gasten voor veel afwisseling (en verrassingen!) zorgen.
De groep rond whistle- en Uillean Pipes-bespeler Paddy Moloney is al decennialang een van de grote promotors der Keltische muziek in verschillende verschijningsvormen, doch vooral de Ierse. Dat bewijst dit optreden in Zwitserland, in het jaar dat de groep 35 jaar bestond, eens temeer.
