"Another set of solid British folk-rock from these longtime vets is loaded with soaring group harmonies, rather ambient textures, and an authentic feel and musicianship that marks all of their best work. Though these tracks don't necessarily pack the punch of the work of earlier Steeleye Span lineups, there is hardly a bad song here. The set might suffer from a slight homogenous feel, but there is no arguing with tracks like the opener "The Prickly Bush," the graceful balladry of "Go From My Window," and the darkly satirical "You Will Burn." The lineup is legendary, rivaling only Fairport Convention in their Sandy Denny/Richard Thompson heyday. Ashley Hutchings, Dave Mattacks, Tim Hart, future Pogue Terry Woods, and Gay and Maddy produced a landmark album, that still inspires many. For their follow-up, British-folk icon Martin Carthy and former classical violinist Peter Knight were brought in to replace the departed Woods family. The disappearance of drums gave the songs on "Please To See The King" the distinct timbre of electric medieval music. "Ten Man Mop" finds the group getting sparser still. "Steeleye Span stond eind jaren '60 en begin jaren '70 met Fairport Convention aan de wieg van de Britse folkrock. En net als FC duikt de groep rond zangeres Maddy Prior nog steeds in wisselende bezettingen op. Hier zijn de 5 albums bijeengebracht die men tussen 1972 en 1975 opnam voor Chrysalis. De groep had daarvoor al 3 LPs gemaakt en knokte zich suf voor een doorbraak. Die zou echter pas in 1975 komen met "All Around My Hat", een nummer dat een goede afspiegeling is van waar Steeleye Span destijds voor stond: dansbare folkrock in driekwartsmaat met een hoofdrol voor de vlijmscherpe stem van Maddy Prior en waanzinnig goede koortjes. De groep is in de jaren zeventig altijd diezelfde koers blijven varen en deze vijf platen verschillen stilistisch gezien dan ook nauwelijks van elkaar. Wel is duidelijk te horen dat de muzikanten hun kunstje steeds beter onder de knie krijgen. Het laatste album in deze set, "All Around My Hat" (1975) is dan ook zonder meer de beste van de vijf." "This CD is comprised of selections from two concerts, 1986 and 1994. I am surprised at the fine quality Span exibits here. Live tracks include the best version of 'Blacksmith' I'd ever heard. I never particularly cared for that song but here it's given a rock rather than folk emphasis which I like. Also noteworthy are the energetic and efficient renderings of 'King Henry' and 'Spotted Cow' which are among the best versions of those songs in the vast studio and live Steeleye canon. Tracks 6-13 are presumably from 1994. It's said that their new rhythm section injected needed enthusiasm into the band. This is, without a doubt, a possitive and upbeat setlist. Dit album van de in 1969 opgerichte Britse folkrockgroep verscheen in 1988 op vinyl en pas in 1991 op CD. De CD bevat drie nummers meer dan de oorspronkelijke LP. Van de oerbezetting is op deze CD alleen zangeres Maddy Prior nog over. In 2019 vierde groep (nog altijd met Prior aan het roer) haar 50-jarig bestaan.
In 1978 kondigde de band aan ermee te gaan stoppen maar 2 jaar later brachten ze toch dit album uit. Het album was commercieel niet succesvol en het duurde nog 6 jaar voor een volgend album verscheen. Deze versie bevat 3 bonustracks.
