"De 50-jarig jubileumviering van Grateful Dead, in 2015, beperkte zich grotendeels tot de VS, waar de groep zich met uitputtende openluchtshows ooit een goddelijke status verwierf. Deze compilatie met 32 nummers laat horen dat je niet stoned op een festivalweide hoeft te liggen om te genieten van de muziek van Jerry Garcia en co. Het overzicht laat horen hoe de vanuit San Francisco opererende groep medio jaren 60 begon als echte garageband. Onder invloed van nieuwe tijden sloeg de band al snel zijn vleugels uit. "Nadat The Grateful Dead zich in de jaren 60 geprofileerd had als een psychedelische band bij uitstek, werd in 1970 het roer omgegooid. Workingmans Dead markeert de transitie naar een band die een veel akoestischer geluid laat horen. Op de opener van het album Uncle Johns Band horen we de invloeden van de vriendschap met de heren Crosby, Stills & Nash: prachtige close-harmony zang, die ook de rest van het album domineert. Toch horen we bij de Dead ook country-invloeden, zoals in High Time en Dire Wolf, waar een prominente rol te horen is voor de steelgitaar van Jerry Garcia. Ander hoogtepunt is Cumberland Blues waar country, rock n roll, folk, psychedelica en close harmony prachtig samensmelten. Met Workingmans Dead vonden The Grateful Dead zich opnieuw uit. Vanwege het 50-jarig jubileum is het album opnieuw opgepoetst en als bonus is er een compleet concert uit 1971 (Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY) toegevoegd. (Platomania)
In Europa heeft The Dead nergens die haast goddelijke status bereikt die de band rond gitarist/zanger/componist Jerry Garcia in de VS heeft. De curieuze mengeling van psychedelica met country- en folkrock is goebeschouwd wat wisselvallig. Door de groots opgezette live-spektakels (zoals in Egypte bij de piramide van Gizeh in 1978 en vele marathonconcerten in de VS) werd de band door sommigen zelfs progressieve rock-kwaliteiten toegedicht. Hoewel absoluut moeder aller jambands, is een symfonische aspect er zelden. Maar luister dán naar het plaatkantlange titelnummer van dit album uit 1977. Deze productie van Keith Olsen (ook bekend van Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Heart, The Babys en vééél meer) begint nog ietwat countryrock-achtig, maar ontwikkelt zich tot een bombastisch 'epic', inclusief orkest en koor! 't Overige (waaronder een cover van Martha & The Vandellas' "Dancin' In The Street") neigt wel wat naar de laidback funky rootsy sound van Little Feat, hoewel "Estimated Prophet" ook wel iets van Steely Dan heeft.
"Het is vijftig jaar geleden dat het debuutalbum van The Grateful Dead verscheen en dat wordt nu gevierd met een fraaie deluxe editie. Het bleek lastig te zijn de verrichtingen die de band op het podium weergaf - met zijn vele improvisaties - op band vast te leggen. Dat lukte pas een paar jaar later nadat er een kleine koerswijziging richting countryrock werd gemaakt, maar hier is het nog volledige psychedelica. Onder invloed van ritalin (!) maakte de band de opnames in een lang weekend en speelde men naast eigen werk ook een paar blues en folk covers. Een groot deel van het album zou tot in lengte van dagen op de setlist blijven staan. De deluxe editie heeft een extra schijf waarop een volledig concert uit 1966 en een wat tracks van een paar dagen later. Het is een van de weinige liveopnames uit de eerste twee jaar van de groep en er staan een drietal tracks op die nooit meer gespeeld werden. "This second album pushed the limits of both the music as well as the medium. General dissatisfaction with their self-titled debut necessitated the search for a methodology to seamlessly juxtapose the more inspired segments of their live performances with the necessary conventions of a single LP. Since issuing their first album, the Dead welcomed second percussionist Mickey Hart into the fold, whose methodical timekeeping would become a staple in the Dead's ability to stop on the proverbial rhythmic dime. Likewise, Tom Constanten (keyboards) added an avant-garde twist to the proceedings. The band were essentially given carte blanche and simultaneous on-the-job training with regards to the ins and outs of the still unfamiliar recording process. Although the uninitiated might find the album unnervingly difficult to follow, it obliterated the pretension of the post-Sgt. "These 2 DVDs contains two of the three full-length sets that the Grateful Dead performed on December 31, 1987/January 1, 1988, at the Oakland Coliseum Arena as well as the "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" encore -- which features the Neville Brothers. The Grateful Dead were at the height of their popularity in the mid- to late '80s. The band's symbiotic relationship with their audience is evident through their consistently stellar performances during this era. This show is no exception. They mix old favorites such as "Bertha," "Uncle John's Band," and "Wharf Rat" with newer material from "In the Dark" (1987) -- including a pair from Bob Weir ("Hell in a Bucket" and "Throwin' Stones") as well as the rarely played Garcia track "When Push Comes to Shove." While the entire show is pulled off with considerable aplomb, the unabashed highlight is the extended "Lady With a Fan"/"Terrapin Station" suite. "The eighth studio album by the Grateful Dead. Many believe this studio record comes closest to capturing the energy of the Dead in concert - this album is at the very top of the Dead studio work. Few bands have as varied a pedigree as the Dead, so following their early-seventies dalliance with countryinfluenced rock the band was searching for new directions. Much of this 1975 release is the sound of the Dead rebuilding itself from scratch. It contains some of the band's strongest songs. The melodies and playing are superb, it is also rooted heavily in fusion jazz, almost every song here is filled with a vibrant energy, atmosphere and creativity. But what really makes this album is that the Dead stretch out and jam on many of the songs including the instrumentals "King Solomon's Marbles" and "Sage And Spirit." That jazz like spirit permeates the album; it is a complex work that flows together from start to finish. Older Dead is great, but for this period of their journey, this is a crown jewel." (Bertus)
