"Tweede EP in een trilogie die eind 2016 werd afgetrapt met "Not The Actual Events" (niet op CD uitgebracht, alleen digitaal en (beperkt) op vinyl - HB). De muzikale inhoud is simpelweg typisch NIN anno 2017. Trent Reznor is niet langer enig bandlid; Atticus Ross, met wie Reznor o.a. de soundtracks van The Social Network (2010) en The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011) maakte, is er net als op "Not The Actual Events" bij. Wat diens invloed is, is moeilijk te benoemen - Reznors zet altijd zeer nadrukkelijk zijn stempel op alles wat hij maakt - maar de 5 songs op deze EP klinken wel wat filmischer dan we van de reguliere NIN-albums gewend zijn. De single "Less Than" doet nog het meest denken aan de iets toegankelijkere industrial rock op bijv. "With Teeth" (2005) en "Hesitation Marks" (2013), maar de andere 4 tracks zijn een stuk avontuurlijker en onvoorspelbaarder - en dus boeiender. "The original album has been remixed for 5.1 Surround Sound on SACD. This opens up the sound, providing greater clarity and separation. This might not necessarily be a good thing in the industrial metal style, but it works well here, because of all those sudden edits that take the music from a loud, noisy sound picture down to a solo vocal or acoustic guitar. About the extra's: "Burn" comes from the soundtrack to "Natural Born Killers"; "Closer (Precursor)," "Closer to God," and "Memorabilia" from the "Closer To God" maxi-single; "Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now)," "Hurt (Quiet)," and "The Downward Spiral (The Bottom)" from the "Further Down the Spiral" remix EP; the cover of Soft Cell's "Memorabilia" from the "March Of The Pigs" maxi-single; and the cover of Joy Division's "Dead Souls" from the soundtrack to "The Crow". "Na "Year Zero" (2007) zat Trent Reznor zeker niet stil. Hij startte een band met zijn vrouw en producer/componist/muzikant Atticus Ross en nam met de laatste enkele filmsoundtracks op. Die Ross speelt sinds "With Teeth" (2005) een schijnbaar cruciale rol in het muzikale leven van Reznor. Het werk dat ze samen maken is veel elektronischer en kent wat meer ambient-invloeden en soundscapes dan ouder NIN-materiaal. Op dit eerste NIN-album in 5 jaar is Ross ook duidelijk hoorbaar een van de producers. Niet dat er een compleet nieuwe weg is ingeslagen, maar het album is qua sound wel elektronischer. Opener "Copy of A" klinkt nog redelijk old school, maar een song als "Find My Way" had ook van een goede thrillersoundtrack kunnen komen. NIN vliegt hier van dikke beats via prachtige, sfeervolle stukken naar freaky gitaarlijntjes en weer terug, maar alle songs zijn verdomd goed. Ze kruipen onder de huid.
