Dizzy For President (1997)

"John Birks Gillespie (1917-1993) was een imposante trompettist en muziekvernieuwer, maar haalde op en naast het podium ook volop fratsen uit. Om die reden kenden meer mensen hem onder de bijnaam Dizzy Gillespie dan als John Birks. Dat zijn boeker begin jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw buttons begon te verspreiden met de tekst Dizzy for president, paste bij dat grapjassen-imago. Maar waar getwijfeld mag worden aan de presidentiële ambities die rapper Kanye West deze week opnieuw uitsprak, meende Dizzy Gillespie het wel serieus toen hij in 1963 zijn kandidatuur voor het presidentsschap aankondigde. Met zijn kandidatuur wilde Gillespie de impasse in de burgerrechtenstrijd doorbreken. Zanger Jon Hendricks schreef een tekst op de wijze van Gillespies klassieker Salt peanuts. Die prees de kandidaat aan als alternatief voor alle anderen: Your politics ought to be a groovier thing / Vote Dizzy! Vote Dizzy! / Set a good president whos willing to swing / Vote Dizzy! Freddie Freeloader Jon Hendricks And Friends (1990)

Album uit 1990 van de "master of vocalese", zanger en tekstschrijver Jon Hendricks. "This CD would be highly recommended if only for Jon Hendricks' brilliant vocalese version of "Freddie Freeloader," which has Bobby McFerrin singing pianist Wynton Kelly's part, Al Jarreau as Miles Davis, George Benson as Cannonball Adderley, and Hendricks re-creating John Coltrane. However, all 13 selections on this very memorable set have their strong moments, and the other guests include the Manhattan Transfer, the Count Basie Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis, Stanley Turrentine, Tommy Flanagan, Al Grey, and the Jon Hendricks Vocalstra. "Jumpin' at the Woodside" recalls the Lambert, Hendricks & Ross version, Judith Hendricks sings Louis Armstrong's solos on "Stardust" and "Swing That Music," Turrentine helps to re-create "Sugar," there are a couple of Thelonious Monk tunes, and the exciting proceedings conclude with "Sing, Sing, Sing." Jon Hendricks And The All-Stars - Boppin' At The Blue Note (1995)

"Jon Hendricks, the genius of vocalese (writing words to fit recorded solos of jazz greats), has long been one of the top lyricists in music. However, the emphasis during the first seven songs of this live CD is on scatting and heated bop-oriented improvising. Hendricks, assisted by daughter Michele, is joined by an all-star horn section: Wynton Marsalis (t), Al Grey (tromb), Red Holloway (as), and Benny Golson (ts) and a supportive four-piece rhythm section. The biggest surprise is "Everybody's Boppin'" which features scatting by Jon, Michele and Marsalis. Wynton is quite effective and virtuosic in a manner similar to Dizzy Gillespie. Michele is excellent on an uptempo "Almost Like Being in Love" and "Since I Fell for You". Jon and the vocal ensemble perform vocalese versions of three Count Basie charts long ago recorded by Lambert, Hendricks & Ross: re-creations of re-creations. This was Jon Hendricks' best recording in several years and one of the finest 1995 jazz vocal albums." (Scott Yanow, Allmusic)
