"With each of his Trio Tapestry albums, it feels like saxophonist Joe Lovano is trying to strip his playing and the group's sound down to its most essential elements. On their third album, he takes this approach even further, turning each song into what feels like a prayer. Once again joined by pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Carmen Castaldi, Lovano doesn't so much improvise with his bandmates as commune with them, crafting songs that have the atmosphere of a dark room meditation and other times the quiet warmth of a friendly front porch conversation. Of the meditative variety there is "Grace Notes," which opens with the abrupt shimmer of a gong and a full minute of silence before Crispell's low piano rumble shepherds the trio back to life. The song features Lovano on the tárogató, an Eastern European instrument whose reedy sound (a combination between a clarinet and a soprano sax) blends with Crispell's Asian-influenced harmonies like a singer whispering through fog." "Piano genius Marilyn Crispell teams for a set of duets with the relatively unknown - though outrageously talented - Sicilian saxophonist and clarinetist Stefano Maltese. This set is approached from the position of opposites attracting. Maltese has been deeply influenced by the phrasing and lyrical construction by Steve Lacy. Crispell plays percussively. Here her playing moves into a range of colors and emotions not usually associated with her. Her approach to counterpoint and harmonic invention here are both lyrical and dynamic. Here, she is clearly the music its servant, which coaxes Maltese to look toward overtones as a way to engage the improvisation from within. Maltese provides a reasonable foil for Crispell. She, on the other hand, must have viewed him musically in a much different light because this is her most restrained, graceful, elegant improvising on record. There isn't a moment here that is not, while musically very sophisticated, emotionally very moving. Highly recommended." (Allmusic)

"Op de foto's in het boekje bij "Vignettes" lijkt Marilyn Crispell eerst betrapt, dan glimlacht ze schuw, daarna glijdt de blik afwezig weg. Een gevoelige ziel, dat staat vast, al kwam ze oorspronkelijk met behoorlijk assertieve muziek in de jazz terecht. Ze zat toen in de slipstream van Cecil Taylor en Anthony Braxton. De aandachtige luisteraar bespeurde nochtans toen al de sensitieve persoonlijkheid die vandaag lyrische platen maakt voor ECM. Opmerkelijk: dit is haar eerste soloplaat voor het label. Ze bevat 17 korte stukjes, afwisselend strak gecomponeerd en vrij geïmproviseerd. Soms zijn het impressies, soms is er een duidelijke melodie, soms een ballade, dan weer een springerige vingerdans of een donkere mijmering. Crispell kiest niet voor één sfeer, maar laat alle registers toe. Toch is er een constante: ze klinkt eenzaam. Niet zozeer als mens, wel als muzikante. Opmerkelijke, hoogst originele muziek voor een kathedraal. Breekbare pianolijnen (Marilyn Crispell) gemengd met pompeuze kerkorgelflarden (Karin Nelson) met daartussen folky songs, met verschroeiende uithalen gezongen door Lena Willemark.
Uit 1997. De stukken zijn wel van Peacock, maar het het spel van dit trio met Gary Peacock (b) en Paul Motian (d) maakt dat slechts een uitgangspunt bij boeiende onderlinge aftastingen van drie gelijkwaardige musici, waarbij minder meer is.
