"Op 29 november 1958 gaven Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers een verbluffend concert in het Kurhaus in Scheveningen. De live opname van deze legendarische avond is uitgebracht op dubbel-CD door Fondamenta, een label met dezelfde passie voor uitmuntendheid en perfectie. Art Blakey was in 1954 mede-oprichter van the Jazz Messengers samen met pianist Horace Silver. Een aantal jaar later leidt hij het kwintet alleen, op zoek naar de grootste talenten, om ze te coachen en mee te nemen naar de top. Het ensemble breidde zich uit tot in de late jaren 80 van de vorige eeuw, maar al in 1958 waren ze geïnspireerd, succesvol en doordrongen met zelfvertrouwen. De crème de la crème van de jazzwereld stond deze bewuste avond aan de Nederlandse kust op het podium en de avond geraakte in de vergetelheid totdat deze opname werd uitgebracht." (Platomania)

"Het is 21 december 1958. Kom binnen in de Parijse Club Saint-Germain, geniet van de nieuwste Amerikaanse hardbop. Kopenhagen had zijn Jazzhus Montmartre, voor Parijzenaars was Club Saint-Germain le temple du jazz. De erediensten in de tempel werden bezocht door gretige, jazzhongerige gelovigen. Hoogtepunten waren evenals elders in Europa concerten van Amerikanen. En de Amerikanen kwamen wat graag naar Europa! En wat zullen de Parijzenaars genoten hebben van Blakeys Jazz Messengers in de fameuze bezetting met Lee Morgan (trompet), Benny Golson (tenor), Bobby Timmons (piano) en Jymie Merritt (bas). Daar klonken ze dan: de Blues March, Moanin. Wat indruk maakte op de fijnproevers was het unisono samenspel van tenor en trompet in de themas perfect qua dynamiek en articulatie. Alsof één muzikant aan het woord is, in plaats van twee. De geluiden die opstijgen uit het clubpubliek let op het moment, vlak na de inzet van Moanin verhogen de sfeer, en laten ons delen in het enthousiasme." (Concertzender)

Opnamen van een concert uit 1989 ter gelegenheid van de 70e verjaardag van Art Blakey. "Highlights include the opportunities to hear Shorter in this setting (he is well featured on "Lester Left Town") and versions of "Along Came Betty" and "Blues March" that contain short solos from many of the players. In addition, Michele Hendricks sings Horace Silver's words to "Mr. Blakey"; drummer Roy Haynes plays second drums on "Blues March"; and the CD concludes with a nearly-13 minute interview that Mike Hennessey conducted with Blakey in 1976 in which the drummer reminisces about the Jazz Messengers' early days. De carrière van vibrafonist Lionel Hampton (1909-2002) begon al in de jaren '20 en hij zou in het swing- en beboptijdperk uitgroeien tot een heuse wereldster. Hij bleef tot op hoge leeftijd actief en hier is hij op 84-jarige leeftijd te zien met een 8-koppig ensemble met menig jazzgrootheid in de gelederen, zoals trompettisten Clark Terry en Harry 'Sweets' Edison en saxofonist Benny Golson. Natuurlijk zijn de heren over hun toptijd heen, maar dat compenseren ze met aanstekelijke flair.

Nat Adderley plays cornet alongside Golson's tenor in this, one of his last recordings before he passed away. Always fresh and deep in the groove is pianist Monty Alexander, and acoustic bassist Ray Drummond plays fat notes with ultimate conviction. "Successful match of McDuff's small-combo organ jazz with big band arrangements by Benny Golson. The blend was well-executed, never fighting with or drowning out McDuff's organ. McDuff wrote about half the material, and while Golson was responsible for just one number, it's the standout title track, "Prelude". That nine-minute piece moves from an opening of almost classical orchestrated grand solemnity to a slow-bopping section dwelling on McDuff's mourning organ. Nothing else on the album matches it, but the rest is pretty good, sometimes leading off with other Golson orchestrations; A very young George Benson gets a chance to steal the solo spotlight for a bit in "Dig Cousin Will." The 2003 CD reissue of the album more than doubles its length with 11 bonus tracks, all taken from 1964-1966 sessions (originally released on five different LPs) which were either arranged and conducted by Golson, or featured Benny Golson's Big Band as players." "Jon Hendricks, the genius of vocalese (writing words to fit recorded solos of jazz greats), has long been one of the top lyricists in music. However, the emphasis during the first seven songs of this live CD is on scatting and heated bop-oriented improvising. Hendricks, assisted by daughter Michele, is joined by an all-star horn section: Wynton Marsalis (t), Al Grey (tromb), Red Holloway (as), and Benny Golson (ts) and a supportive four-piece rhythm section. The biggest surprise is "Everybody's Boppin'" which features scatting by Jon, Michele and Marsalis. Wynton is quite effective and virtuosic in a manner similar to Dizzy Gillespie. Michele is excellent on an uptempo "Almost Like Being in Love" and "Since I Fell for You". Jon and the vocal ensemble perform vocalese versions of three Count Basie charts long ago recorded by Lambert, Hendricks & Ross: re-creations of re-creations.
